Nationwide Protests Erupt After ICE Shooting in Minneapolis:

An ICE agent fatally shot 37-year-old Renee Nicole Good, in Minneapolis, during a large-scale federal immigration enforcement operation. The Department of Homeland Security said Good tried to run over an agent, but Minneapolis officials disputed the self-defense claim and said available video does not clearly support the federal account; the FBI and Minnesota authorities opened investigations. The killing triggered protests and vigils in Minneapolis and prompted escalating public confrontation between federal officials and Minnesota Democratic leaders. In the days since, large demonstrations have spread nationwide including New York, Philadelphia, California, and Washington D.C, with protestors calling for accountability, an end to ICE deployments, and transparency in the investigation. The Trump administration ordered the immediate deployment of “hundreds” more additional federal agents to Minnesota. Homeland Security Secretary Kristy Noem said the agents will reinforce ICE and Border Patrol personnel already operating in the state, where nearly 2,000 federal immigration agents are deployed.

We advise business travelers in the U.S. to monitor local security conditions closely, avoid planned protest locations and demonstrations, and remain vigilant for quick changes to movement restrictions or heightened law-enforcement presence in urban centers, as real time unrest can affect transit and overall personal safety.

China Commercial Bribery Enforcement Intensifies, Poses Compliance Risks

Shanghai’s People’s Court recently released a report on commercial bribery trials from 2020 to 2024 that are becoming more rigorous and sophisticated, with courts observing offenders increasingly disguise illicit payments as legitimate business transactions, such as loans, salaries, property deals or stock trades, and rely on intermediaries to conceal corrupt practices, complicating efforts by both authorities and companies to detect and investigate wrongdoing. The data shows enforcement traditionally focused more on bribe takers than bribe givers, but recent trends and official policy strongly emphasize investigating both sides of corruption to strengthen the overall anti-corruption regime. Sectors such as construction, finance, trade and real estate have been implicated, and the evolving methods and heightened scrutiny show that even seemingly benign commercial arrangements may attract legal attention under the People’s Republic of China’s (PRC) anti-bribery framework. For Western companies operating in China, the intensification of anti-bribery enforcement means compliance risk is rising not only due to tougher penalties but because standard commercial practices can be reinterpreted as illicit conduct under Chinese law.

We advise companies operating in China to enhance internal compliance tailored to PRC law, conduct through due diligence on third parties and intermediaries and ensure robust monitoring and reporting mechanisms are in place to detect bribery risks.

President Trump Threatens Military Action Against Mexican Drug Cartels:

President Donald Trump stated the U.S. military will “start hitting land” to target drug cartels, a sharp shift from prior operations focused primarily on naval strikes against suspected drug smuggling vessels in the Pacific and Caribbean. Trump’s comments framed the potential action as part of an expanded effort to dismantle cartel operations he describes as a threat to U.S. national security, following the capture of Venezuela’s Nicolas Maduro and the designation of organizations such as Cartel of the Suns as foreign terrorist groups, even though Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has flatly rejected any U.S. military intervention on Mexican soil, reaffirming sovereign drug‑fighting operations must remain under Mexican control.

We advise business travelers to monitor evolving travel advisories and ensure corporate travel and security protocols are updated to address potential disruptions.
