Three Things You Need To Know: 31 Mar, 2025

President Donald Trump Expresses Frustration with President Putin: President Donald Trump voiced frustration with Russian President Vladimir Putin over the lack of progress in ceasefire negotiations and threatened to impose significant tariffs on Russian oil, ranging from 25 to 50 percent to pressure Moscow into agreeing to a ceasefire. The move could deter international businesses from purchasing Russian oil, including major buyers China and India, potentially reshaping global energy markets. Despite previous support for Putin, Trump’s recent statements indicate a shift, as he condemns Russia’s attempts to undermine Ukrainian President Zelenskyy. In addition, defense ministers from Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania have expressed concern a ceasefire in Ukraine could lead to the redeployment of over 300,000 Russian troops along their borders, heightening security risks in the Baltic region. They fear Russia may exploit the pause in fighting to strengthen its military presence near NATO member states, potentially pressuring other Western-aligned countries such as Finland. Large-scale Russian military exercises near NATO’s Baltic borders are also anticipated this fall. Given the Baltic states’ security concerns and President Trump’s tariff threats on Russian oil, businesses should prepare for potential geopolitical and economic disruptions. Furthermore, Trump’s proposed tariffs on Russian oil could significantly impact energy-dependent businesses. Businesses should monitor policy developments closely, as secondary sanctions or retaliatory trade measures could affect business operations.

Protests in Türkiye Continue: Demonstrations over the arrest on March 19 of Istanbul’s mayor and 2028 presidential candidate, Ekrem İmamoğlu, by the opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP), are expected to continue throughout the week. Protesters have demonstrated in major CHP-controlled cities such as Istanbul, Ankara, and Izmir, following İmamoğlu’s detention on corruption charges. Demonstrations have turned violent, leading to clashes between police and protesters. Türkiye’s nine-day Eid al-Fitr holiday, which extends until April 7, could reduce tensions as people travel or remain at home. However, the extended break may also provide protesters with more time to mobilize, amplify anti-government sentiment, and escalate demonstrations despite ongoing security restrictions. We encourage anyone with upcoming travel to the region and businesses operating in Türkiye to closely monitor the ongoing protests and political developments, particularly in major urban centers. The risk of disruptions, including roadblocks, transport delays, and sporadic violence, may impact business operations, supply chains, and employee safety.

U.S. Politics: A suspected high-ranking leader of the violent MS-13 gang on the East Coast was arrested in Virginia last week. The arrest of  24-year-old Henry Josue Villatoro Santos from El Salvador, marks a significant success for President Trump’s administration in its ongoing crackdown on organized crime and cartel-linked activities. Authorities apprehended Villatoro Santos in northern Virginia on an outstanding administrative immigration warrant. According to court filings, he was also charged with illegal firearm possession after multiple weapons were discovered during a search of his residence. U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi confirmed he was residing in the country unlawfully. While the arrest is seen as a major win for the administration’s stricter immigration policies, it may also contribute to broader stigmatization of Latin American communities and raise concerns over the potential erosion of immigrant rights. Additionally, the removal of such a key figure could lead to internal power struggles within MS-13, potentially escalating gang-related violence in the United States. We encourage businesses to be mindful of the potential social and security implications following the arrest. Given MS-13’s history of retaliatory violence, companies operating in high-risk areas should enhance security measures and monitor potential risks. Additionally, businesses should remain aware of the broader political and social climate, as stricter immigration policies may impact workforce availability, community relations, and consumer sentiment.
